Fall club basketball is already in western Pennsylvania gyms.

Western Pennsylvania basketball did not wait for the PIAA winter calendar. On September 26 and 27, Basketball Stars of America ran the Adidas Fall Battle of the Burgh at the Pittsburgh Sports Complex in New Kensington, with boys and girls pools from youth through high school. The published schedule included a high school boys pool and middle-school games, including McKeesport’s eighth-grade boys. That is a real gym, not a rumor about next month.

The organizer’s fall dates page lists college coaches in attendance and a three-game minimum plus championship play. The next event on that same page is the Pittsburgh Fall Invitational on October 3 and 4 at All-American Fieldhouse in Monroeville. Treat the listing as a listing. It is not a roster, and it is not a scholarship. It is evidence that eyes can be in a gym while school soccer is still the sport on the Friday night schedule.

College practice is already moving on the same calendar. North Carolina men’s basketball said on September 24 that preseason practice had gotten underway that week, with a preseason opener set for October 9 in Greensboro. High school players in Fayette County do not need a flight to Chapel Hill to learn the lesson. The college staffs are already in the gym. The high school season is not.

What shows up in a fall club game is the same stuff a one-on-one session is for: first step with a live defender, a decision before the help rotates, and whether the closeout is still honest in the second half. Ages twelve and up. I train basketball that way, the same standard I use on the soccer side from a D License, two years as Uniontown Girls Varsity head coach, and the Penn State Fayette seat. I am the assistant on the Uniontown girls sideline now. The sport changes. The standard does not.

This article is not a promise of a roster spot or a scholarship. Wystepek Ventures, LLC does not hand those out. If you want a session in Vanderbilt or nearby while the fall club window is open, the number is (724) 317-4367.
